Goju
Ryu Technical Series - Part II
by Morio Higaonna
The
benefits of Sanchin training--physical strength, body development, striking
power--can only be realized if the kata is practised correctly. Each movement
must be precisely performed and harmonized with the performer's breathing. When
this is achieved, the latent power of the body can be awakened and harnessed, and
the power of Sanchin experienced. Morio Higaonna's performance of Sanchin is
superb; his demonstration of Sanchin testing procedures excellent, and his remarkable
lecture, truly profound.

Goju
Ryu Technical Series - Part VI
by Morio Higaonna
Filmed
entirely on location in a beautiful Japanese garden, this is the sixth and
final part of the Goju Ryu Karate Technical Series of videos featuring the
world's leading exponent of Goju Ryu Karate, Morio Higaonna, 9th Dan, Hanshi.
It is a fitting conclusion to a post-graduate level instructional course that
is regarded as the finest ever made on the subject, as well as the best selling
in the seventeen countries in Europe, the Far East, and Australasia where
it has been released. Sanseru is a trade mark kata of Goju Ryu, and no one
performs it better. The author also demonstrates in great detail the significance
of the movements, how they are used (bunkai) and training exercises that develop
the ability to apply these powerful techniques dynamically (kakie). A beautifully

The
Encyclopedia of Goju Ryu Part 1
by
Morio Higaonna
"Profound
(secret) technique begins from simple technique.
Simple technique ends in profound technique. " Toyama Kanken 1888-1966
It
is impossible to teach the most sophisticated and effective methods of karate
to large groups of students, in a quasi-military setting. These "secrets,"
which are the core of the Goju Ryu system, can only be transmitted from master
to student by means of personal instruction for traditional karate's teaching
methodology is, and always has been, for the tuition of individuals.
To
truly master karate one also needs to receive instruction at a much higher
level than the majority of students can ever experience. That is the purpose
of this program and those that will follow it-to make available to everyone,
individual instruction, at the highest level, from the world's leading exponent
of Goju Ryu karate.
Author
Morio Higaonna is the student of An'ichi Miyagi, who studied exclusively with
the Founder of Goju Ryu karate, Chojun Miyagi. Higaonna Sensei is assisted
in this presentation by Instructor Tetsuji Nakamura.
Contents:
Junbi Undo-training methods unique to karate for increasing strength & flexibility;
Sabaki-effective defensive and offensive movement in karate. Kamae-stances
that provide a stable base to fight from.

The
Encyclopedia of Goju Ryu Part 2
by
Morio Higaonna
"the
diligent and sincere practise of the fundamental kata will initiate the fusion
of one's spirit and body, and movement along the correct path of karate will
begin."
Chojun Miyagi 1888-1953
Founder of Goju Ryu Karate
Chojun
Miyagi Sensei stated, "Hojo undo are practised with the aim of perfecting
the kata." In the same lecture, given in Osaka on January 28th, 1936,
he went on to say, "...kata is an exercise for the whole body, while
the individual movements are performed with the objective of self-defense."
This second volume of the series brings together these two concepts by demonstrating
in great detail the supplementary exercises, or Hojo Undo, and the basic kata
Gekki Sai Dai Ichi & Gekki Sai Dai Ni, and Saifa. Following Miyagi Sensei's
teaching method, the individual movements are explained, as is their role
in the complete version of the kata. Author Morio Higaonna is the student
of An'ichi Miyagi, who studied exclusively with the Founder of Goju Ryu karate,
Chojun Miyagi. Higaonna Sensei is assisted in this presentation by Instructor
Tetsuji Nakamura.
Contents:
Hojo Undo using the chi-ishi, nigiri game and ishi-sashi to develop overall
body power; the historical development of Gekki Sai Dai Ichi and Gekki Sai
Dai Ni and their performance; the kata Saifa.

The
Encyclopedia of Goju Ryu Part 3
by
Morio Higaonna
Morio
Higaonna was first taught the kata Seiyunchin by his friend, Tsunetaka Shimabukuro.
After he joined the dojo of Chogun Miyagi in April 1955, he learned exclusively
from An’ichi Miyagi, a senior student of Chojun Miyagi, the Founder
of Goju Ryu karate. Clearly this kata was viewed as important by Miyagi
Sensei as it was one of those he chose to demonstrate during his research
trip to Fuchow, China, in 1915. He also taught it widely during his year
long visit to the Hawaii Islands that began in the Spring of 1934 where,
it is believed, he felt that Sanchin, the first kata normally taught in
Goju Ryu, was too arduous an introduction to his system for students who
had not been prepared by strength training and body conditioning.
A private lesson in Shisochin and Seiyunchi kata with the world's greatest
exponent of Goju Ru that reveals the technical intricacies of the art that
will greatly improve your own karate.

The
Encyclopedia of Goju Ryu Part 4
by
Morio Higaonna
“Today there exist approximately twenty to thirty different kata. The names of the kata differ according to their creators. Each kata contains numerous attack and defence movements in a sequence and are performed in all directions. The overall kata is an exercise for the whole body, while the individual movements are performed with the objective of self-defense.”
Chojun Miyagi 1888-1953
Founder of Goju Ryu Karate
Goju Ryu makes no secret of its Chinese origins, yet it should not be considered a purely Chinese martial art. While the patriarch of Goju Ryu, Kanryo Higaonna, trained in China as a young man and was clearly influenced by the principles and practices of Chinese boxing, Okinawan Goju Ryu is more than just another form of White Crane Fist.
In the evolution of Goju Ryu karate, Okinawan self-defense methods were blended with Chinese combat techniques, principles, and strategies. Training methods were changed somewhat to suit Okinawan practitioners, their physiques, and life styles. What resulted after more than a half century of development was Classical Okinawan Goju Ryu karate as presented in this series of programs.
Ironically, this is without doubt closer, in a technical sense, to what Okinawan students were taught by 19th Century boxing masters in China, than modern Chinese Wu Shu. During the late Qing era and the early days of the Chinese Republic, with notable exceptions, the martial arts went into decline in China.
In the backwater of Okinawa, however, when change happened, it did so at a snail’s pace. As good Confucians, the Okinawans revered tradition and resisted change. With the rest of Asia in turmoil for more than fifty years, the tranquil, rustic, sub-tropical islands of Okinawa provided a safe repository for Chinese Boxing methods, as well as the crucible in which they were refined and developed for use by the generations that would follow.

The
Encyclopedia of Goju Ryu Part 5
by
Morio Higaonna
“It is essential for each movement to be performed with one’s whole body and spirit. The goal of martial arts is to unite the mind, spirit, and power. Performed with sufficient stamina, kata training can ultimately result in the realization of one’s true essence.”
Chojun Miyagi 1888-1953
Founder of Goju Ryu Karate
It was the tradition in Goju Ryu karate for a student to be taught Sanchin, and only one or two of the other Kaishugata by the Founder of the style, Chojun Miyagi Sensei. He, and only he would determine which kata they were taught, his decision being based on the attitude, ability, and determination of the student.
And so even his best pre-war student, Jin’an Shinzato, learned only Sesan and Tensho after Sanchin. Seiko Kina learned Seiyunchin; Yagi Meitoku Suparinpei, and Shunshin Furugen, Kururunfa.
The second world took a great toll on the Okinawan karate community. By the time peace was restored, Chotoku Kyan, Choki Motobu, Kentsu Yabu and a host of other senior karate masters were dead. Many of Miyagi Sensei’s students had been killed during the hostilities, including Jinan Shinzato. In the post-war chaos of their homeland, few young Okinawans had the inclination, the time, or the resources to practice karate.
Fearful for the future of his art, Miyagi Sensei radically changed his teaching methods. In the immediate post war years until his death in 1953, he focused his attentions on his most dedicated students, chief among them An’ichi Miyagi and Shuichi Aragaki. He taught them the whole Goju Ryu syllabus at what would have been considered, even a decade earlier, an accelerated pace. Young, fit, accustomed to hardship, and with a voracious appetite for knowledge, they trained daily and learned fast. By the time Miyagi Sensei died in October 1953, they were an important part of the future of Goju Ryu karate.
The author of this series of programs is the student of An’ichi Miyagi and trains with both Miyagi Sensei and Aragaki Sensei to this day. All three represent, technically and spiritually, the very essence of Chojun Miyagi’s Okinawan Goju Ryu karate.
