Goju
Ryu Technical Series - Part II
by Morio Higaonna
The
benefits of Sanchin training--physical strength, body development, striking
power--can only be realized if the kata is practised correctly. Each movement
must be precisely performed and harmonized with the performer's breathing. When
this is achieved, the latent power of the body can be awakened and harnessed, and
the power of Sanchin experienced. Morio Higaonna's performance of Sanchin is
superb; his demonstration of Sanchin testing procedures excellent, and his remarkable
lecture, truly profound.

Goju
Ryu Technical Series - Part VI
by Morio Higaonna
Filmed
entirely on location in a beautiful Japanese garden, this is the sixth and
final part of the Goju Ryu Karate Technical Series of videos featuring the
world's leading exponent of Goju Ryu Karate, Morio Higaonna, 10th Dan, Hanshi.
It is a fitting conclusion to a post-graduate level instructional course that
is regarded as the finest ever made on the subject, as well as the best selling
in the seventeen countries in Europe, the Far East, and Australasia where
it has been released. This excellent video deals in great detail with the remaining kata Sanseru. The method of learning the kata is shown and it is then perfomed from two angles at full speed, and in high quality slow motion. To his practical demonstrations the author adds explanations which are voiced over in English, and also shows the applications of the kata and their significance in great detail (bunkai) and then how they are used in actual combat (kakie). A beautifully
produced and immensely useful learning tool that is in a class of its own.

JUNBI UNDO etc.
"Profound
(secret) technique begins from simple technique.
Simple technique ends in profound technique. " Toyama Kanken 1888-1966
It
is impossible to teach the most sophisticated and effective methods of karate
to large groups of students, in a quasi-military setting. These "secrets,"
which are the core of the Goju Ryu system, can only be transmitted from master
to student by means of personal instruction for traditional karate's teaching
methodology is, and always has been, for the tuition of individuals.
To
truly master karate one also needs to receive instruction at a much higher
level than the majority of students can ever experience. That is the purpose
of this program and those that will follow it-to make available to everyone,
individual instruction, at the highest level, from the world's leading exponent
of Goju Ryu karate.
Author
Morio Higaonna is the student of An'ichi Miyagi, who studied exclusively with
the Founder of Goju Ryu karate, Chojun Miyagi.
Contents:
Junbi Undo-training methods unique to karate for increasing strength & flexibility;
Sabaki-effective defensive and offensive movement in karate. Kamae-stances
that provide a stable base to fight from.

HOJO UNDO and more
"the
diligent and sincere practise of the fundamental kata will initiate the fusion
of one's spirit and body, and movement along the correct path of karate will
begin."
Chojun Miyagi 1888-1953
Founder of Goju Ryu Karate
Chojun
Miyagi Sensei stated, "Hojo undo are practised with the aim of perfecting
the kata." In the same lecture, given in Osaka on January 28th, 1936,
he went on to say, "...kata is an exercise for the whole body, while
the individual movements are performed with the objective of self-defense."
This second volume of the series brings together these two concepts by demonstrating
in great detail the supplementary exercises, or Hojo Undo, and the basic kata
Gekki Sai Dai Ichi & Gekki Sai Dai Ni, and Saifa. Following Miyagi Sensei's
teaching method, the individual movements are explained, as is their role
in the complete version of the kata. Author Morio Higaonna is the student
of An'ichi Miyagi, who studied exclusively with the Founder of Goju Ryu karate,
Chojun Miyagi.
Contents:
Hojo Undo using the chi-ishi, nigiri game and ishi-sashi to develop overall
body power; the historical development of Gekki Sai Dai Ichi and Gekki Sai
Dai Ni and their performance; the kata Saifa.

SEIYUNCHIN & SHISOCHIN
Morio
Higaonna was first taught the kata Seiyunchin by his friend, Tsunetaka Shimabukuro.
After he joined the dojo of Chogun Miyagi in April 1955, he learned exclusively
from An’ichi Miyagi, a senior student of Chojun Miyagi, the Founder
of Goju Ryu karate.
Clearly this kata was viewed as important by Miyagi
Sensei as it was one of those he chose to demonstrate during his research
trip to Fuchow, China, in 1915. He also taught it widely during his year
long visit to the Hawaii Islands that began in the Spring of 1934 where,
it is believed, he felt that Sanchin, the first kata normally taught in
Goju Ryu, was too arduous an introduction to his system for students who
had not been prepared by strength training and body conditioning.
In the third part of his series Higaonna Sensei shows step by step, and in great detail, the correct method of performing Seiyunchin & Shisochin kata. This includes instruction in correct breathing, tension and relaxation, movement and the elimination of common faults that lead to imperfect kata and therefore, weak technique.

SANSERU & SEIPAI
“In November, 1910, (Chojun) Miyagi returned to Okinawa after his tour in the army had finished. Upon his return, he was shocked to discover that during his absence his brother disciple, Kyoda Juhatsu, had learned the kata Sanseru.” —Koyama Seishin.
The kata Sanseru & Seipai are both covered in this instructional DVD in great depth. This whole series is, in fact, a course of intense private lessons at advanced level in Goju Ryu technique and kata with one of the greatest living exponents of the art. Includes explanations of techniques and bunkai, advice on performance, timing, correct breathing, etc.

Fearful for the survival of his art, Miyagi Sensei radically changed his teaching methods in the post war years by focusing his attentions on his most dedicated students, An’ichi Miyagi and Shuichi Aragaki, and teaching them the entire Goju Ryu syllabus at an accelerated pace.
The author of this series of programs is the student of An’ichi Miyagi and his kata is therefore only one generation removed from the Founder Chogun Miyagi. The program deals with the kata Kururunfa and Seisan in great detail.

SUPARINPEI
Suparinpei kata was a speciality of Kanryo Higaonna, the teacher of Chojun Miyagi, and is the longest and most complex of the Goju Ryu kata. Although the origins of the Goju Ryu kata have yet to be precisely identified, undoubtedly they are to be found in the martial practices common in the Fuchow area in the second half of the nineteenth century.
When the author of this series visited Fuchow for the first time in 1987, and demonstrated the Goju Ryu kata, older members of the Fuchow Martial Arts association recognized, and were able to name many of them.

SANCHIN, TENSHO, KAKIE
This professionally made DVD has three parts which are demonstrated and explained by Higaonna Sensei himself.
The kata Sanchin, literally “three battles,” is common to Okinawan karate styles whose origins can be traced to the Fuchow region of China. Its purpose is to prepare the student for combat by creating an iron body through severe training.
TENSHO is: “…to develop good posture and form, correct breathing methods, and correct harmonization of breathing with one’s movements.”
KAKIE: As the author points during his lecture: “A fight starts with punching and kicking, but always ends at close range.” Goju Ryu fighters are famous for their ability to devastate opponents at short range with locking, breaking, and throwing techniques. It is the study of KAKIE-the push hands methods of training that develops this ability.

APPLICATIONS OF GEKKI SAI, SAIFA, SEIYUNCHIN AND SHISOCHIN KATA
The originators of karate knew that mastery of the fighting method came from the perfection of the kata coupled with a profound understanding of their applications, and they jealously guarded this knowledge from outsiders.
In the modern karate movement that developed following the public debut of the art, what little was known of the kata applications or bunkai was almost lost in the rush to make karate a sport.
In this professional production, Goju Ryu master Morio Higaonna shows in great detail how the movements of these kata are applied (bunkai) in order to overwhelm and defeat an opponent. The author emphasizes that Goju Ryu karate is still firmly based on training methods that are as traditional as they are practical.
This program presents a detailed analysis of the applications of the Gekki Sai kata, Saifa, Seiyunchin and Shisochin.

APPLICATIONS OF SANSERU, SEIPAI AND KURURUNFA
The applications of the kata are the keys to its mastery, and ultimately, the mastery of karate itself. Without an understanding of the bunkai, the kata movements can seem unrelated, ineffective, even bizarre.
However, when the novice is shown how an awkward downward strike works as a takedown; that an apparently insignificant movement is a debilitating pressure point attack; and what appears to be a kick is actually a block, he gains new insight into, and respect for this fundamental element of traditional karate training.

Seisan and Suparinpei are advanced kata, and the author explains and demonstrates them in great detail.
These programs by Morio Higaonna Sensei are the most comprehensive reference work on the subject available, by the instructor who is widely recognized as the most outstanding Goju Ryu exponent of his generation.
