How
to get There
The
Japanese Garden & Suiho En Dojo are located on Federal land in the Sepulveda
Basin at the Eastern end of the San Fernando Valley to the West of Los Angeles,
and close to the junction of the 101 (Ventura) and 405 (San Diego) freeways.
The garden is the showpiece of the Donald C. Tillman water reclamation plant,
a facility owned by the City of Los Angeles. It was designed by Dr. Koichi
Kawana and completed in 1984. The photo above shoes Rev. Toshio Kuramoto with
a group of students and instructors from Europe, Japan, and across America
who attended the Summer 2000 Masters' Seminars at the Suiho En Dojo.
From
the 101 Freeway:
Exit on Burbank and turn westward. Drive about one mile and turn right (North)
onto Woodley Ave. After about one half mile turn right just after the "Japanese
Garden" sign onto Sansui Way and park in the lot where directed.
From the 405 Freeway:
Take the Balboa off ramp and turn North to Burbank. Turn East until you reach
Woodley Ave, North to Sansui and turn right.
From the parking lot walk all the way through the garden and cross over the
stream at the Chinese bridge. Turn right as you step off the bridge passed
the tea house on your left. The dojo entrance will be in front of you.
Security:
There are uniformed security guards on duty at all times, the main guard post
is at the main entrance on Sansui Way. Please park where they direct you to.
Because of the security arrangements it is very important that you reserve

The
Japanese Garden is a very special place and being able to use it is
a priviledge afforded to very few people. We ask our guests to treat it with
the utmost respect, to enjoy its beauty, and take with them when they leave
a little of what makes it so special.
The Suiho En Dojo is a sacred and beautiful place where only the very best
instructors are asked to teach small groups of students. Discipine is expected
not imposed. We invite you to study karate in an atmosphere of friendship
and cooperation, not attend boot camp. You are free to take photos, but please
don't video tape training. We don't like being filmed and assume that others
feel the same.Teachers are available after training to answer questions. There
is usually at least one interpreter present if needed.
To
sum up:
Please cooperate at all times and do what is asked of you.
Please wear a plain white karate gi with minimal markings.
Wear whatever color belt you feel comfortable with.
Enroll in advance. It guarantees you a place and saves hassles on the day
with security. Prepare
thoroughly for training at Suiho En. Expect to work hard and learn
a lot.
Enjoy!
